This fire season has already surpassed anything Central Oregon has seen before.
Since late July, dozens of wildfires have burned across Central and Eastern Oregon. The Bench Fire alone has scorched tens of thousands of acres near Warm Springs, destroying homes and forcing hundreds of residents of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs Reservation to evacuate — some more than once. Governor Kotek invoked the state's Conflagration Act to mobilize additional resources to the fire lines.
Oregon and Washington have now surpassed two million acres burned this season combined — officially making 2026 Oregon's worst wildfire year since at least 2000. As containment grows and some evacuation orders begin to lift, the harder work is just starting: helping families return to what's left, and rebuild what isn't.
